What To Do In an Earthquake
If you are inside
(1) Protect yourself by taking cover under a table or desk.
(2) If any flames are lit, quickly extinguish them. If you are unable to do this immediately, extinguish flames after the shaking stops.
(3) Open a window or door to secure an exit.
(4) Because of the danger of falling objects, do not panic and run outside.
(5) Listen for accurate information and do not be misled by rumors.
If you are outside
(1) Watch above your head for falling objects. Stay away from poles or walls that could fall on you.
(2) If you are in a department store, theater or train, follow the instructions of the staff.
(3) Evacuate on foot and carry as little with you as possible.
(4) If you are driving, pull over to the left and stop, leave your keys in your car and evacuate on foot.
Evacuation Instructions
When evacuating after a large earthquake, take your emergency kit, and gather at a nearby temporary evacuation site, such as a park or school. If this location is determined to be in the path of a spreading fire, you may have to move to an open-area evacuation site. Once all fires have been put out and the surrounding area has been deemed safe, go back and check on the status of your home. If your home has been destroyed, go to the nearest evacuation site, such as the gymnasium of a local school.
Here you will be able to obtain water, food, and provisions.
