Message from the Mayor

Last UpdateJuly 18, 2008

Nishitokyo City was born in January 2001, and we are currently working on new city planning based on the concept: "Enjoying Life in Nishitokyo - A Town of Kindness and Friendly Ties."

Globalization is working its way through all aspects of life and society, and the number of foreign residents in Japan is increasing each year. Since Nishitokyo City is close to the metropolitan area and rich in natural greenery, the number of registered foreign residents has exceeded 3,000 by the end of September 2007, and it accounted for 1.57% of the total population in Nishitokyo City. There is a growing need to build a multicultural society in which there is mutual respect and recognition of various cultures and customs from here on out.

As a first step toward this goal, we have produced a guidebook that summarizes basic information necessary for everyday life for foreign residents in the area. I hope this guidebook will help you lead comfortable, worry-free lives in your local community and be useful in the development of a new culture in Nishitokyo.

April, 2008
Koji Sakaguchi
Mayor of Nishitokyo City
